This evening volunteers and animal advocates are working to remove over 40 cats and one dog from a Luzerne County Home.
The Junction Cat Rescue, Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, and Whiskers World are working together to remove the animals from the home at 2019 State Route 940 and provide vet care, vaccinations, and spays/neuters.
Volunteers described the smell as "absolutely horrid" while noting that 38 of the cats found were kittens and two dead cats have been found so far.
"The property smells," an anonymous source told Hazleton News 1. "you can smell it for a whole block radius. Smells of cat urine."
Pictures of the home are shocking:
The dog, a pit bull breed, was found severely malnourished and kept in a cage filled with urine and feces.
"It looked deplorable" an anonymous source told Hazleton News 1. "you could see it's ribs. It could barely walk."
Sources state the resident of the home and owner of the animals is Jessie Markle. An image of what is believed to be the same dog on Markle's Facebook page from July of 2015 compared to an image of the dog inside of the home is hard to look at.
The dog had apparently been living inside of a cage for an extended period of time. The dog is visibly dirty, it's chain rusted with urine, it's skin sunken into it's frame.
A bed or blanket covered in urine and feces is inside of the cage and Styrofoam plates and bowls were inside and next to the cage, apparently the method of feeding the dog.
For over two hours, rescue members have been searching for cats and kittens within the home. Two have been found dead and dozens have been found alive but in various states of health.
The Junction Cat Rescue explained in a Facebook post that with over 40 cats needing to be fixed, vaccinated, and tested, the cost to the rescue would be almost $4,000.
A "Donate" button was added to their post and in the first 2 hours, the Rescue received over $1,000 in donations.

Sources state that two children, aged approximately 2 and 11 years old lived in the home until Children & Youth became involved recently. A child's room can be seen in one of the images of the home:
Charges have not yet been filed against Markle, imaged above via her Facebook page, though sources state that Police are currently investigating the situation.
