Via HPD press release:
Recently, Hazleton Police Department has begun a strategy utilized nationally, known as "CEASEFIRE" with regard to gun violence and non fatal shootings. The department through a recent LSA Grant has hired a specialist, Dr. Richard Reyes from Science and Technology a Police Consulting firm who will begin training the Hazleton Police Department members this month on more 21st Century patrol strategies and Investigative strategies such as Ceasefire University.
Cease Fire is a strategy where all shootings are handled as homicides to ensure swift and decisive action to reduce gun violence with a focus on group violence. The department is also writing another grant to continue with the Group Violence Intervention Strategy on a larger scale with the company to ensure our message is clear to the criminal element.
"The first shot that goes off, if your group is identified as being associated with the incident, we will vigorously pursue the entire group for any criminal activity."
In deploying this strategy, after last nights shooting, Chief Jerry Speziale responded to Police Headquarters and met with the members of the 2nd and 3rd Patrol Shift and Detective Sergeant David Rodick and kicked the Cease Fire Strategy into action by devising a plan to immediately pursue the individual responsible for the alleged shooting.
