Dog Rescued From House Fire

At approximately 10:40am crews were dispatched to a residential structure fire at 238 West Coal Miner Drive in the Drifton section of Hazle Township.

The fire was quickly escalated to a second alarm structure fire with crews from Freeland, Foster, Weatherly, and Hazleton City, responding to assist Hazle Township Fire at the scene.

Around 11:20am, a crew from Freeland Fire Department operating near the rear of the structure was alerted that there may be a dog hiding under the deck that crews were operating on, very near to where the fire started.

The dog found under the deck suffered no injuries, however required aid from firefighters after inhalation of smoke.

According to Hazle Township Fire Chief Scott Kostician, a second dog was superficially burned on it's chest and also suffered inhalation. A third dog which had succumbed to the heat and smoke of the fire was sadly found in the kitchen area of the home.

Max, the dog rescued from under the deck of the home, and the second dog were taken to a local animal hospital to be evaluated.

Two civilians suffered bites while attempting to calm the dogs. No other injuries were reported.
