Yesterday just after 6pm, Hazleton Police responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at 9th and Locust Streets.
Initial reports stated a motor vehicle accident at this intersection with a pedestrian on a bicycle being struck by an SUV and the pedestrian is still underneath the vehicle.
According to Police, upon arrival a 2015 Jeep Compass operated by a female 57 years of age had stopped at the intersection of Locust and 9th St. and made a right turn onto 9th attempting to park.
Police state that it appears the operator hit the accelerator instead of the brake and struck a male 22 years of age who was on a bicycle on the sidewalk.
The vehicle then proceeded to run over the male and continue striking the porch of the home before coming to final rest against the house.
EMS and Fire Deparment arrived on scene. The male was subsequently transported to the Hazleton Municipal Airport by EMS and flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley with serious/moderate injuries to his head and upper torso.
The porch of 682 N. Locust St. was severely damaged as a result of the crash.
No names to be released on either side as the investigation is still active.
